‘Dark Kingdom’ in Aleksander Ostrovsky’s drama The Storm

The article focuses on The Storm, Aleksander Ostrovsky’s most widely recognized play. The author presents an interpretation of the ‘dark kingdom’ as pictured in a drama. The author interprets the image of Russia as the ‘dark kingdom’ within the context of previous research on the topic. Special attention is paid to the image of Katerina, the main character, who represents a woman of a new era, who subverts the values of Russian patriarchal society.
