Kavad and the Huns: Conflict and Cooperation with the Nomads of the Steppe

Abstrakt

Kavad’s reign (488-496, 498/9-531) was a turning point for the Sasanian Empire. Although many aspects of his rule have been discussed in detail by scholars, his attitude, strategies, and policies regarding the steppe nomads have been somewhat overlooked. In this paper, the authors have used the descriptive-critical-analytical approach to examine the scattered information regarding Kavad’s interactions with the Hephthalites and several steppe tribes for providing an analysis of his eastern affairs.
