Phonetics and phonology from a cognitive perspective – a review and critical analysis in Polish linguistics. Selected issues and proposals

Despite the fact that the cognitive linguistic paradigm is gaining more and more supporters who share its scientific foundations and basic assumptions, it seems that phonetics and phonology are relatively rarely considered branches of linguistics from this perspective. It is difficult to unequivocally say why they are not a ’grateful‘ subject for cognitive linguists and are pushed to the margins of their considerations. It seems that this is simply due to the stronger connection between the cognitive perspective and areas of linguistic research such as semantics (linked to the concept of the embodied mind), pragmatics, and syntax. This phe-nomenon should be considered understandable, but it is equally valuable to compare the fun-damental assumptions of cognitive linguistics with topics that are not related to it per se, including phonetics and phonology. The aim of this paper is to review the achievements of selected Polish linguists in this field, to identify emerging cognitive gaps, and then to formulate specific research proposals and suggestions.
